FMA VS FMA:B series finally continues with the homunculi analysis! Whoa nelly what a time to be alive. Also, I accidentally uploaded this as unlisted but in a playlist so some people found it earlier and left comments on that version. Out of fear that FRlift wouldn't send it out to subscribers properly now, I reuploaded it. Thanks to the 128 people who found it early for being so on top of things. You are majestic.

  • The video has been out long enough that now I can leave some replies to common complaints pinned so others see them: 1. "The intro is too long"--Some people seem to like it, some don't. Wanted to add a bit of levity at the start, and also explain why I'm not doing this analysis the way I previously said I would. Admittedly, it doesn't contain any crucial information. If you aren't interested in it, skip to 00:02:10 2. "Pronunciation of ____ is wrong"--Yes, I messed up pronouncing Selim. My bad. I'll pronounce it correctly from now on. No idea why I had it in my head that it's pronounced that way. However, the pronunciation of "Lin" is based on the official manga translation. Even so, since many people are confused by it, I will refer to him as "Ling" in future parts of the series. 3. "What about Father and Dante?"--I will cover them in another video. 4. "You didn't provide enough detail on certain homunculi"--I will be covering other aspects of the homunculi in other videos. In particular, the Father and Dante video will have a lot on them. Basically, I had to cut certain things out and move them into other videos to avoid repeating myself later. 5. "Mangahood is an annoying word"--Fair enough. I knew that some people wouldn't like it, but I chose to go with it. It makes certain sentences easier to write, and shortens the overall length of the script a bit. I'm still undecided, but I may stop referring to it as that (or just use that term less) in future videos. If I notice any other consistent things coming up in the comments that I want to address, I will add them to this comment. Thanks for watching and reading through this.

    • Nah I think this video was very comprehensive. I watched both series a while ago (Brotherhood, or Mangahood I kinda like the term, a little more recently) and forgot about the differences. Not to mention that this REALLY explains everything about the homunculus and their different forms. I do remember Lust being much different in the 2 series and the deaths of bradley being different. Also remember Pride Selim being SCAWWY AZ FAWK. Also you pronounced Selim wrong? How else are you supposed to pronounce it? I assume the "i" sounds like an "e" instead? I still like your pronunciation in the video better.

  • I’ve been muddling over this thought since I first watched FMA. Considering how philosophers stones work in FMA, there isn’t really such a thing as a true philosopher’s stone as no matter how many human lives get dumped into it, it will run out. The meter will run out and the well will run dry, thus making it the biggest wild goose chase and middle finger to alchemists everywhere. Perfect doesnt exist. And it never will. The sooner people accept that simple fact the sooner they can find happiness.

  • This was a super cool dissection of the characters and their purposes in the story! I've only seen Brotherhood (just recently finished it for the first time), and while I've heard that the 2003 anime isn't as fondly remembered because it was made before the manga was finished and so it did it's own things, I didn't realize how different things were between the two. I'm thinking of watching the 2003 anime now just because I'm very intrigued about the Homunculi (even if I don't like the idea of Izumi dying, she's my fave). Also I love the term "Mangahood" - it's an excellent shorthand for the continuity you're referring to. Video essays need their own help as opposed to like, a literary essay that you would read. Silly to me that people don't like it.

  • One thing this video reminded me of is that the 2003 FMA put the homunculi about in the same place as Al during the Laboratory 5 arc. Barry the Chopper suggests that Ed created the ideal brother, fabricating all the memories and attachments Al has, even mocking Al that Winry and others would lie as they were all in on it. This seems to be what occurs with the homunculi, only with Dante suggesting that the alchemists who created them similarly created beings to fill roles. Barry did it for giggles. Dante did it to win loyalty.

  • Great video! I have kinda a nitpick though, admittedly it is not a big deal but an important distinction when you say "it is alright if they are illogical " people are only "illogical from the viewpoint of others. All well written characters follow their own internal logic and make choices based on that logic. It may be flawed or warped due to outside influences or how the character developed. So saying "its alright to have illogical characters " is just a tad disingenuous as opposed to saying "context for their decision or something of the like. Your ideas got across though and this is a bit of a nitpick. Good video like it alot. As you were

  • I strongly disagree with the segment on manga Envy. In my eyes the reason Envy kills itself is because of convenience - the story as a whole has been peddling this idea of never killing, Ed and Al refusing to kill pretty much anyone regardless of situation. Envy kills itself because all of the important characters, Mustang, Riza, etc, can't kill it because it goes against that higher moral. At the same time Envy is such a vile being that its continued existence would inevitably lead to more death and suffering, Envy needs to die. It killing itself is the only way the main characters can absolve their self of the sin of killing while preventing the sin of letting Envy live. Additionally, the idea that Mustang shouldn't kill Envy because its "for himself" is frankly stupid. First off, Mustang does the same thing with Lust, someone who is merely adjacent to the killing of Hughes, the idea that he would pass the chance to kill Envy because its motivated by selfishness is stupid. Not to mention Envy is a sadistic, vile and evil monster - letting it live would undoubtably cause much more suffering. Comparably Lust is far less monstrous. The motivations of one's actions aren't important, what is important is the result. Killing Envy would've been a good deed, because Envy enjoys the suffering of others and as such would most likely cause more of it in the future. Just cause Mustang would've enjoyed killing it doesn't make it inherently enjoyable. To me the biggest failing of FMA is the refusal to delve into deeper and more powerful topics. It touches on ideas like equivalent exchange and the morality of killing but refuses to actually think about them. Kimblee and Al's talk really exemplifies this idea. Al says he wants both of the things he wants (to save everyone and to get their bodies back) but Kimblee says by trying to do that there's a possibility they'll get neither. But this isn't really true. We know this is a story, and that the Ed and Al will definitely get their happy ending, and our expectations are correct. FMA is a story that loves playing with interesting ideas but hates exploring them deeply. Still a good manga/show though

  • I liked the idea of how the Homonculi were created in FMA 2003

    Seargent DemoSeargent DemoIl y a 20 jours
  • Here's this theory of mine: Father failed to extract his pride completely. He's shown to be prideful to some extent while Pride is shown to lack pride in himself. Pride was also the first Homonculus Father created so it's not completely insane to think that he could have been imperfect. Father seemed to be almost omniscient about the world around him but maybe the extraction was incomplete because he lacked knowledge of himself. After all, he was created to reveal secrets of the world, not to tell about himself. He simply couldn't fully understand his emotions. And another, a bit less serious theory: the reason why Lust lacked personality was because she was lust of asexual being that doesn't reproduce. The fact that he has any is because human genes were used in creating him but he doesn't need any to survive. Of course it's the least important of his traits.

While I don't think it will compare to brotherhood for me, this video really made me interested in what the alternative story has to offer. • when 2003's Sloth started to speak her final words, not gonna lie, that hurt a lot because it was so unexpected, I was thinking she would rage and be full of hate, that would have been "logical" but instead some humanity shows, and just as Ed sees that, she dies.

Kory The Dumpster RatKory The Dumpster RatIl y a 25 jours
  • In Brotherhood, they all refer to humans are lower beings. Bradley, at one point, says it might be time for the new generations to take over, prompting Pride to chastise him. Lust, after openly calling humans pathetic, refers to herself as human. This goes in line with the two of them being the smartest Homunculi - they were aware that, for all their power, they were no better than humans.

Kory The Dumpster RatKory The Dumpster RatIl y a 25 jours
    • Also, the infighting between the homunculi drastically increases after Lust's death. She was the smart big sis keeping the group together. Without her, Envy starts mouthing off to all the rest, even abandoning Gluttony, Gluttony starts ignoring Father's orders, instead focusing on his vengeance, Bradley ceases helping the other homunculi (as he was about to help her, but was too late), Pride bosses sloth around, then kills Gluttony. Hell, even the first Greed is shown being friendlier with her than any of the others.

  • I haven’t watched the original fma but I rly like the idea that the homunculi are botched human transmutations. From what I have gathered fma is more abt the characters and draws parallels between them and the homunculi while fmab is more focused on some of the more philosophical and biblical connections. Correct me if I am wrong tho.

    • The first anime, 2003, was being made while the manga was being created, and so is much slower, and, because the manga was not done when they were making it, had to create a seperate ending from the manga to make sure they did not end up overflowing the anime with filler. As such, it is very different, with homunculi getting their names changed, or sometimes being different characters altogether, and an overall crazier ending that is... controversial at best. Great characters, but strange plot. Brotherhood, the second anime, is much more faithful to the manga(not completely faithful, but closer) and has an ending that isn't a complete clusterfuck. Both are good shows though.

  • A couple of things for you guys to think on. 03 Wrath could literally only be killed by being used in a transmutation, because he was his corpse, 03 Sloth represented emotionlessness rather than laziness, a side of sloth rarely explored, both versions Wrath and Pride could be argued to be the strongest Homunculus of their version, and in Mangahood despite appearances, Pride is the oldest Homunculus and Wrath is the youngest Homunculus. Also I hate how I can tell the the Bradley used in the thumbnail is Pride form 03.

ECP GamingECP GamingIl y a mois
  • Even with the aid of flattering analysis the 2003 anime seems increasingly inferior when compared to the manga/brotherhood in all respects. It takes all the difficult concepts of the manga and turns then into a more generic and digestible tropes; Like here with homunculi, the whole "clone with identity crisis" dilemma we have explored to death in other media and it derails too much into personal angst whereas the original homunculi being pieces of a primordial being which makes them not that much different from original humans opens up much more existential questions for the artificial human issue besides the basic "who I am' pondering. Its not a bad direction but remarkably less cerebral and more emotionally manipulative.

    TonatiubTonatiubIl y a mois
    • @Tonatiub *Everything in the manga is seamlessly connected to a neoplatonic model of reality: Who is the truth and why are humans punished when they step out of the line? The truth is the source and despair is the price people pay in exchange for knowledge. The main atagonist is a lower emanation of this source but higher than humans and as such it can create further emanations of itself* This is, of course, fine, but you just described a high concept that can be present in the series, but is not handled in any way. If you are really familiar with Neoplatonism, you should understand that the One has no agency. That is, it cannot make arbitrary decisions. But that's how the Truth works. Secondly, the lower emanations are not able to communicate with the one. It is not framed and incomprehensible. In the Brotherhood, the truth takes an anthropomorphic form and clearly explains everything you need to know. This is plot-function Thirdly. The principle of cruel but just punishment corresponds primarily to the Old Testament god Yahweh, and not to the One from Neoplatonism. You may also notice the markings of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life on Edward's Gate. Here, of course, there is an indirect connection with Neoplatonism, since the fruits of the tree-Sephiroth, can be interpreted as emanations. But all this is definitely Jewish Gnosticism. Plus, if you take into account all the shortcomings that I highlighted above, then your self-confident statements about the formal and semantic perfection of the Broho are simply questionable. In addition, you have never given examples when this topic was actually handled in the series. It remains only at the level of the high concept in the form of allusions. *Homunculi being original beings raise interesting themes because despite being seemingly superior on a surface level they eventually begin to show the flaws product of their creation under very different circumstances to ours as the dwarf in the flask itself is as much of a lowly deity as much as it is a bigger human.* Give examples of how this topic was actually handled in the series. And I'm not just talking about story arcs, but specific scenes, because 03 is full of such examples *Philosopher Stones are simply the condensation of the human essence to point in which it loses expression and makes it easier to repurpose and extract emanations from it; Transmutation on itself is a process of extraction, emanations from the planet which is itself a higher emanation of the source than both humanity and the dwarf in the flask; Which is why the dwarf needed to merge with the planet before even being able to hope to grasp God in his hands.* Ok what exactly is emanated during simple transmutation. what does the earth or part of it emanate into? Please answer in a meaningful way. And yes, this is another high-concept that is not handled in the series. *Where is the truth and why are people punished? Dunno have some shadow babies who dismember people because they want to be born or something; Why are they in the gate? Its cool and dramatic.* No, my friend. The gate to 03 simply has a different meaning. In version 03, the gate is originally an otherworldly and unrecognizable element. While in broho the Gate and Truth, which are absolutely metaphysical entities, are not questioned, in 03 the characters are constantly puzzling over what the Gate is and how it is integrated into the system of the world and alchemy. In the series, there is a dialogue between Izumi and Edward who discuss this topic and make guesses. Ed says that he saw the Truth, and Izumi says that she saw nothing but hell, and that Edward probably imagined it and it was just an illusion. So do not complain about the fact that you did not get any explanation. In the series itself, reference is made to the unknowable nature of the gate. *What is the connection between the bad guy and the homunculi? They are her tools because why not; She casually strolls around the world collecting failed human transmutations.* Yes, they are tools. Despite the fact that there is no formal connection, you can observe in 03 more personal interaction between them For this reason, in broho they look more like tools, despite the presence of a formal connection with the Father. In addition, homunculi have more connection with the main characters. It actually has more artistic value than broho. *Why does failed human transmutations create homunculi despite defeating the point of the futility of human hubris? Because it sounds cool, creates angsty antagonists and we can add more drama to the failed attempts despite the characters already having been punished for it.* Again, no. Homunculi are also new creatures, in the minds of which alchemists ' memories of a dead person were imprinted. This is an additional and even more effective reminder that you didn't just fail. but they also took upon themselves the sin of creating beings who did not want to be born, and were only born to suffer. *Why are there prototype philosopher stones? Because we need to hype up the REAL philosophers stone, completely missing the original point of the simple cruelty of their design.* Absolutely useless and meaningless claim *Why is there a parallel world and why is transmutation powered by causing destruction on it? Because we didnt get the point of CHANGE that was made in the original, its hella dramatic and sad and we played a lot of videogames with that trite plot element. Why would the gate be the portal to this other dimension? Because we didnt understand anything about the gate at all. It all flew over our heads.* I can talk about it in another comment if you want because it's a separate topic. • @Astemir Abazekhov Everything in the manga is seamlessly connected to a neoplatonic model of reality: Who is the truth and why are humans punished when they step out of the line? The truth is the source and despair is the price people pay in exchange for knowledge. The main atagonist is a lower emanation of this source but higher than humans and as such it can create further emanations of itself; This also illustrates an important difference between resurrecting people through alchemy and the creation of new beings through it which in turn drives the point home that the Elric brothers had an utterly wrong approach in attempting to use alchemy to revert something to its previous state as transmutation is simply change and its impossible for a human to change something to a perfect simulacrum of its previous state without a philosopher stone to help them break their limits (Which also connects to Scar's character arc, who also erroneously believed he could "undo" things which is merely an illusion). Homunculi being original beings raise interesting themes because despite being seemingly superior on a surface level they eventually begin to show the flaws product of their creation under very different circumstances to ours as the dwarf in the flask itself is as much of a lowly deity as much as it is a bigger human. Philosopher Stones are simply the condensation of the human essence to point in which it loses expression and makes it easier to repurpose and extract emanations from it; Transmutation on itself is a process of extraction, emanations from the planet which is itself a higher emanation of the source than both humanity and the dwarf in the flask; Which is why the dwarf needed to merge with the planet before even being able to hope to grasp God in his hands. All of this cohesion and faithfulness is thrown away in the 2003 anime for the sake of drama and "cool" ideas: Where is the truth and why are people punished? Dunno have some shadow babies who dismember people because they want to be born or something; Why are they in the gate? Its cool and dramatic. What is the connection between the bad guy and the homunculi? They are her tools because why not; She casually strolls around the world collecting failed human transmutations. Why does failed human transmutations create homunculi despite defeating the point of the futility of human hubris? Because it sounds cool, creates angsty antagonists and we can add more drama to the failed attempts despite the characters already having been punished for it. Why are there prototype philosopher stones? Because we need to hype up the REAL philosophers stone, completely missing the original point of the simple cruelty of their design. Why is there a parallel world and why is transmutation powered by causing destruction on it? Because we didnt get the point of CHANGE that was made in the original, its hella dramatic and sad and we played a lot of videogames with that trite plot element. Why would the gate be the portal to this other dimension? Because we didnt understand anything about the gate at all. It all flew over our heads. And finally the point of this video: The homunculi; Are they more elaborated in the 2003 anime? Lust is at least but that isn't really a positive thing when she absorbs so much attention to her basic-ass clone blues, taking the development of Envy, Greed, Wrath and Pride away who all had something interesting and differnet to say besides "oh Im no the person I was supposed to be!". Ultimately the only thing the 2003 anime has to say about homunculi is that they are just sad, soulless, incomplete humans who should simply not exist whereas in the manga they are a different breed of humans whose flaws when compared to us come from the inherently flawed nature of their too-human creator who had skewed priorities when he created them. Even at the end in the 2003 anime Wrath sacrifices himself because hes an abomination whereas in the manga Pride is allowed a second chance at being a proper human.

    • Could you be more specific about your claims? Your statement of the question makes sense, but you don't even try to defend this point of view. However, I still do not agree with what you are trying to say. 2003 works incredibly subtly with this theme, while broho simply follows the Shonen tropes.

  • Not gonna lie, I cried a lot at the end. Although I never really understood FMA when I first saw, it was the 2003 version and I was like seven when I first watched, I never stopped watching, and indeed became my favorite anime. As I grew up and started to understand more the several messages that the anime shows, I got more attached to the homunculus than the main characters. They were more human than ever, just by simply questioning their existence and purpose.

  • 22:24 Envy the Jealous, the worst character in Fullmetal Brotherhood, killed *themself. Ed calls them a he either out of ignorance, transphobia, or to get revenge for the moniker Fullmetal Pipsqueak. Envy is a they bc they envy humans for not just their resilience but also apparently for their ability to sleep together. Plus, Envy’s disguises change their physical sex to complete the illusion, so their real identity/genitals don’t matter. I doubt that damn worm even has genitals. I sure hope not.

  • I enjoy Lust in Brotherhood the most because of the odd fact that she's the only homunculous that seemingly isn't obsessed with the sin she's based on. And I can get that for a show that was to air on TV she couldn't be like constantly having sex or anything, but she doesn't even flirt, and aside from wearing reveling clothing, she barely uses feminine charm either, aside from tricking Havoc. Gluttony is constant asking to eat everything, Greed constant talks about wanting everything, Sloth constantly complains that he has to work so much, Envy puts on a show, but at his death, shows his true colors that he envies humans to the extreme, Wrath let's his anger get the better of him in almost every fight he's in, and Pride has multiple monologs about how he's the ultimate being, aside from Father, how even the other Homunculi don't compare to him, and all of these lead to atleast small problems im sure Father would have liked to avoid, but not Lust. Lust simply does what she's told, and really the only mistake she makes in Brotherhood is underestimating Mustang. Even though he's almost impossible to damage, Sloth constantly takes detours to fight people, even though he could reasonably just keep digging. Wrath let's his anger get the best of him which makes his fights sloppier, and instead of going down to help father, sets out for revenge at the end. Gluttony is just constantly an idiot, and then eats Ed, which father would have wanted to avoid. Envy is constantly mocking the humans, and spends far too long monolog to cover his envy. Pride gets tricked and trapped because of his pride, underestimating all his foes, and Greed isn't even on their side since he wants more than Father would ever give him. But Lust, she simply follows orders, and does everything right, except one small mistake at the end, underestimating who's turns out to be the only dude that can beat a Homunculus in his own.

  • I think it's funny how he says Mangahood. I honestly don't like Brotherhood, from skipping the beginning of the story, or fast forwarding through it, to it's "they all lived happily ever after" ending. So I honestly stopped watching the English dub once finding out what Greedlin sounds like. The Sub I skimmed when it wasn't dubbed and when I was still obsessed with the series before the last few chapter's of the manag were online. I eventually finished the offical set, with a B1G1 sale. But that was only to sell them as a complete set instead of V1-whatever. Some random person online bought them for more then I paid so I'm happy. No longer needed the manga volumes, was never going to read it again, so Got my money back and then some. Happy camper :) Salem survives Brotherhood/Manga because of the HEA ending. He's a child, and his mother was still alive, and got to raise him. So the child can't die. Then you'd have the greaving parent. Putting a downer in the Happy Ending.

    • @George Tarrant didn't need 3 comments, that's why they invented editing. Glad you got enjoyment from brotherhood, I did not. Life's to short to give it another try. I know the entire story anyway, so there is no reason to watch it. You watch something to either find out what happens, or you enjoyed it. Have a nice day.

    • Yeah the ending is happy, but that doesn’t take away from dark and complex Brotherhoods story can get compared to other anime, and I feel like if they ever continued there’s still room for a dark storyline.

    • Still, I think that the anime was well done, especially the English dub. It’s more well rounded than other Shonen (focuses action AND other elements like story, drama, comedy, romance more than other series like Dragon Ball for example). Also the English voice actors have amazing performances, and the line rewrites in the dub fit the lip syncing well. I’m sorry you couldn’t enjoy all the way through but I’m telling u it is worthwhile to finish. The FMA manga, both anime, both episodes and movies (besides the Netflix one of course) are all great in my book and worth seeing to the end.

George TarrantGeorge TarrantIl y a mois
    • I thought the ending was a bit too cheery as well, but there are some ‘downer’ elements thrown in there. 1. Ed didn’t get his leg back and looses his alchemy, showing that despite all they’ve done, his attempt to bring his mother back to life can never be forgotten. 2. Pride is still alive, and there’s no way to know if he’ll remember what happened or turn evil again. 3. Mustang didn’t become Fuhrer, and there is something twisted about Grumman’s obsession over ruling. 4. A lot of info regarding Father, the homunculi, and Bradley’s involvement has been covered up. It’s unclear how much the Amestrians and Bradley’s wife knew by the end, leaving the door open for more government corruption and cover-ups. 5. Hoenheim, Greed, Hughes, Fu, and more died. 6. The chimera still don’t know if they can reverse their conditions caused by the government experimenting on them.

Life isnt fair and while for one " Equivalent Exchange is the Ultimate Law" for others Life has brought nothing but suffering for NO REASON. Even WHEN you give it your all you WONT get the perfect ending you are hoping for because Life doesn't bend because of YOUR rules You bend according to Lifes Rules.
