  • Bill Bryson "Mother Tongue" is a wonderful study that may offer you another understanding of English language. As a French man, living in Laos for 20 years, and teaching many subjects including English, this book helped me a lot to pacify my relation with the new international language that finally owes a lot from French. Though English has one of the biggest dictionary (entries), it is very practical and, thus... quite poor. Thanks for your show and the short videos (sponsored by Canal).

  • Ha, anglophone Canadian here. I've been studying French since I was a kid (without ever going to French immersion schools, because I guess I have to do things the hard way) and when I was 16, I spent the summer in Quebec to learn French. Oooh boy. For anyone who doesn't know, they teach PARISIAN French to kids in Canada. Sounds strange, but it's so we can use our French outside of just Quebec. Anyway, I had been told that Canadian French is different, but no one ever told me *how* different, exactly. I had never heard that accent before and oh boy. So I arrived in Quebec, having learned French in school for 7 years by that point, I thought I'd be fine. NO. For the first two weeks I could barely make out what anyone was saying. AND THEN. Then, as I was working in a food bank with gardens and all - the lady showing me what to do pointed to a bad of dirt and said "taire" (like fire in English). AND MY MIND WAS BLOWN. So all this time, every time I heard someone say this new French word that sounds exactly like "fire" - it was FAIRE ALL ALONG. Laundry - instead of "linge" it was "lange". Anyway, over the summer I figured out about 80% of what everyone was saying, so I could absolutely understand what Paul was saying in his Quebec rant

  • This reminded me of the days when we had French au pairs. We realised that if they didn't understand a word in English, especially if it was a technology or scientific type word, we'd just try it with a French accent, and more often than not it'd work! "It's a commission." "Eet ees what?" "Commission" "Quoi?" Hmmmm - let's try a French accent. "It's a Co-mis-si-yon." "Ohhhhh!

Oh dam this video is way older that I thought. Happy 2021.
