Perseverance Rover’s Descent and Touchdown on Mars (Official NASA Video)

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance mission captured thrilling footage of its rover landing in Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The real footage in this video was captured by several cameras that are part of the rover's entry, descent, and landing suite. The views include a camera looking down from the spacecraft's descent stage (a kind of rocket-powered jet pack that helps fly the rover to its landing site), a camera on the rover looking up at the descent stage, a camera on the top of the aeroshell (a capsule protecting the rover) looking up at that parachute, and a camera on the bottom of the rover looking down at the Martian surface.

The audio embedded in the video comes from the mission control call-outs during entry, descent, and landing.

  • hello people from mars

  • Hard times for conspiracy theorists ;-) For me it is the first time, Mars became somehow "real" . For the first time I also got the feeling that I am very happy with our good old Earth, Mars isn't really the place to settle down. The idea with the cameras is very good - why not earlier? They probably copied it from Elon Musk. His rockets seem to consist only of cameras. Very good marketing, excellent job!

  • how tf is the control center getting real time live video from the rover when it takes forever to send a signal from mars to earth?

    s e n d f o o d ss e n d f o o d sIl y a 15 heures
    • The was no real time video. At the time of EDL, the one-way light travel time was 11 minutes and 22 seconds. The rover recorded the various EDL videos and downloaded them to Earth a day or two later. JPL took those videos and merged them with the Mission Control commentary to produce this video. The controllers had only basic telemetry to monitor the rover and that is what they are commenting on.

      Viktor KharkivskyyViktor KharkivskyyIl y a 13 heures
    • The sky crane uses a mono propellant called hydrazine. It decomposes into nitrogen and hydrogen and a little ammonia. These gases are all transparent. That is why the rocket plumes are clear. The sky crane has 4 propellant tanks loaded with a total of 401 kilograms of hydrazine.

The Mission Controllers had basic telemetry to tell them what stage of the EDL the rover was executing, but no capability to affect the outcome. The rover executed the EDL autonomously.

    • @Steve Adams Great reply thank you. so if i understand correctly there are sattelites orbiting mars? that is crazy dude

      TechFanaticTechFanaticIl y a 2 jours
    • The EDL videos were recorded by the rover and then downloaded to Earth about a day or two after the landing. The rover uploads data to one of the Mars orbiters and then the orbiter relays it to Earth via the Deep Space Network (DSN). I don’t know how long the actual transfer took. I’m not sure if this is the first ever video from Mars, but it is the first video of EDL.

      Steve AdamsSteve AdamsIl y a 2 jours
  • I'd be so much more for these missions if they'd stop 'justifiying' them with the 'search for past life' that was never there. GO FOR CONQUEST. All that other 'maybe' 1 in a nada chance nonsense is bad investment.
